Father Christmas or Santa Claus?

Father Christmas is an old English figure. He stood for good food, drink and fun at Christmas, and he did not bring presents at first. In the 1800s, the American Santa Claus arrived in Britain with his sleigh, reindeer and gifts. The two merged. Most British families now use both names for the same man.

Letters up the chimney

British children often put their letter to Father Christmas in the fireplace. The smoke carries the wishes up the chimney to the North Pole. Today, many families post the letter instead. Royal Mail replies to letters sent to Santa's Grotto, Reindeerland, XM4 5HQ, if they arrive by the early December deadline.

On Christmas Eve

• A stocking at the end of the bed. In many British homes, the stocking goes on the bed, not on the fireplace.
• A mince pie and sherry. The classic treat for Father Christmas. Some families leave milk or a small whisky.

December 26 is a public holiday. Families visit relatives, go for a walk, watch football, or hit the sales.
